Chapter Eleven

She managed to avoid thinking about it for the next four days. It turned out to be pretty easy, because Shane kept her in bed for most of that time. If he wasn’t gone or doing whatever business a gangster handled—and she couldn’t imagine it had much to do with marketing or public relations, but probably involved some accounting—he had her on the bed, in the tub, on the couch, or against the wall.

Once, he even took her in the solarium in the middle of breakfast. She’d offered a token protest at the ability of anyone to see them, but had soon forgotten her objections when his hand traveled under her skirt to stroke her bare mound. Forgoing panties had been her idea, but he’d loved the discovery so much that he’d forbidden her to wear them at all after that.

She’d pretended to mind and had argued, but had acquiesced fairly easily. Mainly because she enjoyed the sensation of different (or no) fabrics against her bare lips, and also because there was something deliciously naughty about teasing him with the knowledge that she wasn’t wearing underwear—especially when he was about to go somewhere and had no time for sex.

To her chagrin, they had settled into an easy relationship full of teasing and witty banter. It should scare her to be so relaxed with her captor, but Mia was having more and more difficulty remembering all the reasons she hated being at his mercy as the days passed.

He surprised her that afternoon with an announcement that had her eyes widening with surprise. Mia tilted her head. “Are you sure?”

Shane frowned. “You don’t like the ballet?”

She lifted a shoulder. “I’m Russian enough to love ballet, Shane…” Breaking off, she nibbled on her lower lip. “It’s just…you once said it would be a long time before you trusted me enough to let me leave the grounds. Do you trust me now?”

He hesitated, looking a bit pensive. “I think so. Besides, I’m going to be with you the whole evening.”

“What’s to stop me from screaming for help the minute we get into public?” Mia couldn’t believe she’d uttered that question and mentally kicked herself. Was she trying to sabotage a chance to get away from his home for a while?

His lips twitched. “I can think of two good reasons why you aren’t going to do that.”

“Oh?” She braced herself for threats, though he hadn’t shown her that side in days.

“The first is Aldo Peretti. If you aren’t with me, he’ll find a way to get to you.”

She inclined her head, but didn’t confirm or deny his supposition. He was right, but he didn’t need to know she agreed with him. His sense of confidence was already massive. “And the other reason?”

Shane pushed aside his empty coffee cup as the maid came to claim their dishes from the table. She was a small black woman with a friendly smile and seemingly no propensity to deliberately scald Mia with hot coffee.

Remembering the incident sent a twinge of pain through her shoulder, where a blister was starting to fade.
